Fetal Movement and Fetal Kick Counts
Fetal movement is reliable after 28 weeks gestation. Prior to that movement may be sporadic. After 28-30 weeks
gestation you should start performing daily Fetal Kick Counts.
· Choose a time when the fetus is more active and you have time to concentrate on fetal movement. Try for the same time during each day. Avoid bedtime.
· Give yourself up to 2 hours to detect 8-10 movements.
· Sit or lie on your side and count each fetal movement- kick, rub, jump, or hiccup.
Normal movement is 4 in 1 hour.
For most babies this will take only 10-30 minutes. If you do not get 4
movements in 1 hour, drink a glass of juice or soda, and start again. If you
do not get 4 movements in the second hour call the office or your provider. There
is usually not a problem, but you may be directed to come in for fetal monitoring to rule out complications.
